Gender Integration Impact in Adolescent Empowerment: The Act With Her Project

This brief highlights gender integration efforts in a multi-pronged adolescent empowerment program implemented by Pathfinder and CARE in Ethiopia. Though the main objective was to increase the agency of adolescent girls, the program tested additional activities for adolescent boys, parents, and community members to see if these activities could enhance the impact on adolescent girls. The program led to girls’ increased agency, knowledge of important issues facing adolescent girls such as menstrual health and early marriage, and economic empowerment.

Gender Integration Impact in Girls’ Empowerment: The IMAGINE Project

This brief examines a gender transformative girls’ empowerment program with the primary goal of delaying the timing of first births among married adolescents in Niger and Bangladesh. Using multiple gender integration strategies, the program team at CARE were successful in improving girls’ agency and self-efficacy in both contexts, and in increasing uptake of family planning in Niger.

Gender Integration Impact in Family Planning: The MOMENTUM Project

This brief highlights gender integration strategies used in the MOMENTUM program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The program sought to improve MNCH outcomes for first-time mothers and to increase uptake of family planning and included activities for the mothers, their male partners, extended family, and community members. This integrated program was successful in increasing first-time mothers use of moder family planning methods and to improve male partners’ involvement in MNCH activities.

Gender Integration Impact in Clinical Trials: The KEN-SHE Trial

This brief details innovative gender integration strategies used during a clinical trial for single-dose administration of two types of HPV vaccines in Kenya. The trial demonstrated that integrating gender into clinical trials can enhance safety and benefits for participants, improve retention throughout the study period, and produce robust results without compromising on scientific or ethical rigor.
